North Dakota law recognizes three classes of social worker: Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), and Licensed Social Worker (LSW). The requirements are as follows:

North Dakota LICSW (Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker)
North Dakota LICSW Education Requirement: A master’s or doctorate degree in social work from a CSWE-accredited program
North Dakota LICSW Exam: Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Clinical Level Examination
Field Requirement: 3,000 hours of post-master’s experience supervised by an LICSW; clinical experience earned within a four year period
Fee: $25 application fee, $75 license fee, $260 ASWB examination fee
Additional Information: Criminal background check and Child Abuse Central Index check required
Endorsement: Available upon board approval
License Renewal: Renewal is required every two years. Requirements for renewal are the successful completion of 30 contact hours of continuing education, including 2 hours in ethics, and payment of a $75 renewal fee.

North Dakota LCSW
North Dakota LCSW Education Requirement: A master’s or doctorate degree in social work from a CSWE-accredited program
North Dakota LCSW Exam: Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Master’s Level Examination
Field Requirement: None
Fee: $25 application fee, $75 license fee, $230 ASWB examination fee
Additional Information: Three references including field supervisor, faculty supervisor and social worker are required; state and federal history checks and Child Abuse Central Index check also required
Endorsement: Available upon board approval
License Renewal: Renewal is required every two years. Requirements for renewal are the successful completion of 30 contact hours of continuing education, including 2 hours in ethics, and payment of a $75 renewal fee.

North Dakota LSW (Licensed Social Worker)
North Dakota LSW Education Requirement: A bachelor’s degree from a CSWE-accredited program
North Dakota LSW Exam: Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Bachelor’s Level Exam
Field Requirement: None
Fee: $25 application fee, $75 license fee, $230 ASWB examination fee
Additional Information: state and federal history checks and Child Abuse Central Index check also required
Endorsement: Available upon board approval
