Become a Social Worker in Montana

Licensure as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) is required for any official practice as a social worker in Montana. The requirements are as follows:

Montana LCSW
Montana LCSW Education Requirement: Masters Degree in Social Work (MSW) or a doctorate in social work from a CSWE-accredited college or university
Montana LCSW Exam: Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Advanced Generalist or Clinical Level Examination
Field Requirement: 3,000 hours of supervised, post-degree psychotherapy work completed in no less than two years including 1,500 hours of direct client contact. Supervisors must hold a valid state license as a social worker, psychologist or psychiatrist.
Fee: $200 application fee, $260 ASWB examination fee, $27.25 fingerprint background check
Additional Information: Three current letters from licensed social workers, licensed psychologists or licensed psychiatrists are required. A supervisor of the applicant must write at least one of the letters. All applicants for licensure must obtain a fingerprint and background check from the Department of Justice.
Endorsement: Available upon board approval
License Renewal: Renewal is required every year. Requirements for renewal are the successful completion of 20 contact hours of continuing education and payment of a $175 renewal fee.
